Bully No More | April 25, 2010 - 1 year 40 weeks
Lots is happening. We are doing the middle schools and it is amazing. We get bullying right in the program. One site has some girls who really do not like each other. They are MEAN, MEAN, MEAN to each other. That said, they both consistently come to the program. I am challenging them to find at least one thing they like or admire about each other-WOW, lots of resistance at first-to their credit, they did it. They still don't seem to like each other much, however, they are not as mean. I hear events of bullying all the time in the group. The kids are so open and so honest.
In the elementary program, "THE SAINTS" are moving forward. We are getting our assembly ready for June. The counselor who chose these kids is a genius. She put kids in the program who had had issues of bullying-as a bully or as a bullied. The last session, we had two boys who have had problems with one another for awhile. In the discussion of bullying, and of kindness, the bullied confronted his bully and talked about how he felt at being bullied and his hurt. To his credit, the bully took it and talked about how he has been working at making changes. Because we were working on kindness and replacing bullying with kindness, we had a wonderful in the moment opportunity to practice kindness in the session. The bully worked hard at being receptive and open and aware of the pain he had caused, the bullied kid was able to say that he did see some changes in the bully, and the rest of the kids talked about how they have seen changes and how they are working to help these two and each other make changes. One important element-each of the kids was holding and petting Dynamo as they talked about these difficut topics. I am so aware of the calming and bonding aspect the dogs bring to the program. It is much more powerful than I had expected.
